At the heart of Pickering is the southern most station of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which in 2013 celebrated its 40th anniversary. From Pickering the vintage steam or diesel trains travel across the spectacular North Yorkshire Moors stopping off at Levisham, Goathland (the setting for ever popular Heartbeat and Hogwarts Station in the Harry Potter films) and Grosmont. During the holidays and on special occasions you can even travel to Whitby for the day in style. Each year the NYMR hosts a multitude of events from Steam and Diesel Gala’s to elegant Pullman Dining experiences. Their incredibly popular War Weekend takes place every October and is a sight to behold as the majority of visitors to all parts of the NYMR dress up in period costume and uniforms, entering into the spririt of things by attending dances in the village halls, getting their shoes polished by the shoe shine boys and carting their gas masks around in cardboard boxes on bits of string!
The Beck Isle Museum is perfect for visiting come rain or shine as it has both indoor and outdoor displays. When the sun’s shining you can enjoy the outdoor farm courtyard and riverside picnic area and it’s just as great to spend time exploring the 27 themed rooms during the occasional Yorkshire rain shower.
Dalby Forest is situated on the southern slopes of the North York Moors National Park. Dalby village itself is just inside the forest, only a ten minute drive from Pickering. Just outside the village is the visitor centre and a great play park for children of all ages. For the more adventurous there is the Go Ape! treetop adventure. This is a brilliant high wire experience up in the canopy about 120ft above the forest floor. Zip wires span the valley from side to side, with Tarzan ropes and daring challenges facing you over the course of about three hours. If you’re not up for Go Ape! you can have a great day following the many footpaths and trails and picnicing or barbequeing. Dalby Forest has many mountain bike tracks for all abilities including its World Cup Cycle Trail which in 2011 hosted a round of the of the Mountain Bike UCI World Cup. Dalby Forest also plays host to outdoor concerts which in 2013 year feature Blondie and Paloma Faith.
Flamingo Land is just outside Pickering and is home to some of Yorkshire’s most thrilling theme park rides. If you’re feeling brave try their Flip Flop or Cliffhanger rides, both guaranteed to leave your stomach behind! If the big attractions aren’t your cup of tea they also have smaller and family rides and a large zoo with a collection of some beautiful (and not so beautiful!) exotic animals.
